When I was younger, when it got cold, my mother used to make boots for me by hand to help keep me warm. It was something she did to show that she was thinking of me... that she loved me.
My aunt and cousin came to live with us when I was fifteen. We thought that she'd just come to my mother to ask for help because her husband had died, but... that was a lie. My aunt had been having an affair with my father for years... my cousin was actually my half-sister. Aunt Qian tried so hard to replace my mother in every way that she could. She wanted her dead, and wanted to be my father's wife in her place instead of just his mistress or his concubine.
I'd almost forgotten about it... my aunt made a pair of boots for me, once. She worked her fingers raw like my mother did, but not because she actually loved me. She was trying to manipulate me into loving her, so I wouldn't see what she'd been doing.

I just hope everything's alright without me there... and that my aunt doesn't try anything. My father didn't marry her after my mother left her, like she thought he would. He married the daughter of another family for political reasons. As I understand it, my aunt's life is rather miserable now.
[there is an undercurrent of "it's what she deserves" in her voice. she doesn't sound sympathetic to her aunt's struggles at all.]
She probably doesn't have the resources at her disposal to do much of anything, but... she tried to kill both my mother and me several times, and that was before she fell out of favor. She may not have the means, but at this point her resentment must be very strong.
I wish I was there to keep an eye on things.

When something happens to a sword's real body, it's not a good thing, y'know? It's like - even if they're fine, but they're just left in a bad place with too much negative energy, it can really tear up the spirit. I've heard that it's happened to some before... Getting too tied to dark feelings, until they can't remember what they are anymore or what their purpose is, or that they're here to serve and protect. When it gets like that, all they can do is feed into other people's sadness and hurt, too.
