You do - but numbing it sometimes makes it easier to clean the wound out properly. If a patient is thrashing around because it hurts when you try to clean it, that makes administering the proper treatment much more difficult.
Don't worry. I still don't understand much about this place, but at the very least, no one appears to be at war here. We shouldn't be seeing injuries of that kind.
